Don’t look to the material released so far by Miami producer AbDeCaf for obvious bass drops, goofy melodies, or even any sounds that are particularly happy. On his debut EP, Unravel, and a scant handful of tracks to date, the 20-year-old artist born Steve Vaynshtok has specialized in a sound that’s unapologetically late-night, but not peak-hour.
The songs float in the kind of netherworld overlapping downtempo, ambient, hip-hop, and any number of latter-day lo-fi strains of electronic music. Think, more, music you’d listen to when you get home from the club, and you’re going over all the things you should have done and said instead.
On the strength of Unravel and a few follow-up tracks, the former guitar-band guy already boasts a booking agent at WME and an impressive upcoming run of national festivals, including Electric Zoo in New York this September. These massive venues mean that he’s turning up the energy on a few of his upcoming new songs. The next EP, in fact, features an unlikely cameo by Andrew W.K, who Vaynshtok met last year at Revolution.
“I was just there for sound check because my friend won meet and greet tickets. We watched the sound check and then we got to meet him, and I was just like, ‘Dude I love your stuff, feature on my next EP?’” He recalls. “He said, ‘Sure, I’ll do it for $6,’ but I never even paid him; he was just down to do it.”
That track is still under wraps, but local fans who are curious about the rest can see AbDeCaf perform at Revolution — clearly a recurring motif in his story! — this Friday, July 20. He opens for punishing dubstep duo Zeds Dead, a pairing set for extreme high contrast in musical mood. Stream and download a sample, the track “Old Flame,” below.
AbDeCaf, with Zeds Dead. 9 p.m. Friday, July 20 at Revolution, 100 SW 3rd Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $35.25 with fees; age 18 and up. Call 954-449-1025, or visit jointherevolution.net
