Four D.I.Y. Local Events to Support This Weekend

Celebrate “la ciudad que progresa” all weekend

As residents of South Florida, we want to live in a cool place full of cool people doing cool things. But we can’t just rely on out-of-town touring acts to lend us that frisson of cool. Luckily, one of the great positives of South Florida’s music and cultural scenes is that, no matter how geographically isolated and weird this place is, it’s always full of people who at least try to make things interesting. So, in that spirit, here are five locally produced, d.i.y. events deserving your support this weekend.

Hialeah Fest, Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20 @ Churchill’s Pub

Hialeah, that City of Progress in the wild, western reaches of Miami-Dade, may serve as a catch-all South Florida punch line. But the bold city en espanol has also produced some of the city’s most creative bands over the years. This weekend marks the return of the annual two-day Hialeah Fest, mounted by the city’s official musical boosters, Ferny Coipel and Tony Landa. Okay, so it’s a minor detail that the festival doesn’t actually take place in Hialeah — it’s at Churchill’s Pub, the next most natural location.

The festival spans two days and features some of the best acts to come out of the city — Humbert, the Brand, Radioboxer, Electric Piquete — as well as buddies and honorary Hialeans like Lavola the Dyslexic Postcards, and Riot Agents. Also, Saturday night, at 1:45 a.m., Miami scene lifers are invited to gather at the backyard patio to celebrate the life of Bobby Load, who passed away this morning.

Hialeah Fest. Doors open at 8 p.m. Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20 at Churchill’s Pub, 5501 NE 2nd Ave., Miami. Admission is $7 a day; age 18 and up. Call 305-757-1807, or visit churchillspub.com

Submission, Friday, October 19 @ Lester’s

Jose Garza, the organizer of Submission at Lester’s, has some lofty goals for his new monthly event.  He means it as a “safe space for artists of various mediums to expose their craft,” he told Salty Eggs earlier this week. This means a multimedia night of entertainment including life music from acs like Dear Darling and Copan alongside DJs, comedians, and more. Read more about it in our post here.

Submission. 9 p.m. Friday, October 19 at Lester’s, 2519 NW 2nd Ave., Miami. Admission is $3; age 21 and up. Call 305-456-1784, or visit lestersmiami.com

High Noon, Saturday, October 20 @ the End

Roofless Records and the End present this mid-day extravaganza for no particular reason, which is as good a reason as any. Expect heavy sounds courtesy of names you’ll recognize from other Roofless/Night of Weirds-type events, like Rat Bastard, Mr. Feathers, Xela Zaid, and many more.

High Noon. 12 p.m. Saturday, October 20 at the End, 3145 NE 7th Ave., Miami. Admission is free. Click here for the event Facebook page.

Indie Craft Bazaar: Witch{Craft}, Sunday, October 21 @ Revolution

This ongoing, regular pop-up market celebrates the tactile side of d.i.y. in South Florida. Here’s where all your gift-giving dreams come true. Some 65-plus local artisans gather here to share their handmade arts, crafts, and other creations, from home goods to baked goods. The best thing for your inner child? There’s adult trick-or-treating at all the vendor booths. For your grown-up side, though, there’s also a cash bar and live music.

Indie Craft Bazaar. 12 to 5 p.m. Sunday, October 21 at Revolution, 200 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Admission is $5. Call 305-727-0950, or visit getupandcraft.com/Indie_Craft_Bazaar.html
