Super Lips and Four Other “Thanksgiving Eve” Parties in Miami Tonight
It’s Thanksgiving Eve — in other words, your Friday, if you’re a nine-to-fiver, and your time to get drunk, if you’re shirking cooking duties and like to face family with a raging hangover. Yes, since All of Nightlife convened for a round-table meeting some years ago, the Wednesday before Turkey Day has been dubbed one of the Official Party Nights of the Year. Partake if you dare — there are always the usual super-club parties, but for something fun but a little more low-key, here are some events around town.
Super Lips @ Lester’s
So you love karaoke. Great. But you also love decent music — even better. While “Livin’ on a Prayer” and Madonna jams always go don well at your local drunks-on-stage spot, local artist Oly Vargas and New Times Broward-Palm Beach music editor Liz Tracy aren’t gonna let that shit fly. At Super Lips, their new karaoke night at Lester’s, your interpretation counts as much as your song selection. This is billed as “karaoke for music nerds,” and the possible selections include everything from Morrissey to Serge Gainsbourg to … Antoine Dodson? Click here to check out the Super Lips song list, and head to Lester’s tonight to sing (or just mock mercilessly from the sidelines).
8 p.m. Wednesday, November 21 at Lester’s, 2519 NW 2nd Ave., Miami. Admission is free. Call 305-456-1784, or visit facebook.com/superlipskaraoke
The 10th Annual ’80s Prom @ the Vagabond
Ah yes, nine years ago, you were a young hipster-in-training, electroclash was in full swing, and ’80s revivalism was reaching its peak. Enter the first annual ’80s-themed prom the night before Thanksgiving 2003, an exercise in crazy ironic nostalgia and crazier hair and clothing. Over the years, as various trends have waxed and waned, the ’80s prom has held strong, though, bouncing through various cool-kid clubs in Miami before landing at the Vagabond. As always, dress to impress and dance to DJs playing the decades’ best, as well as live cover bands playing your favorites.
9 p.m. at the Vagabond, 30 NE 14th St., Miami. Admission is $10; age 18 and up. Call 305-379-0508, or visit thevagabondmiami.com
Afrobeta at 786 Wednesdays @ Purdy Lounge
If you’ve lost track of the best on-going mid-week parties in Miami thanks to encroaching things like “responsibilites,” let us remind you of 786 Wednesdays at Purdy Lounge. Helmed by devoted music geeks (meant in the best way) Ray Milian and DJ Joshy Josh, this is where you come to hear the latest in tunes along the indie-dance spectrum. Tonight gets extra-special with a performance by local electro-pop favorites Afrobeta.
10 p.m. at Purdy Lounge, 1811 Purdy Ave., Miami Beach. Admission is free; age 21 and up. Call 305-531-4622, or visit purdylounge.com
Los Amigos Invisibles @ Grand Central
If you love Latin alternative-type groups, you probably already know about this performance by one of Venezuela’s greatest fusion-y dance bands. If you didn’t already know, well, now you do.
10 p.m. at Grand Central, 697 N. Miami Ave., Miami. Admission is $30; age 18 and up. Call 305-377-2277, or visit grandcentralmiami.com
Thanksgiving Bass @ Chalk
Major holidays bring up all kinds of old feelings, so if you’re nostalgic for your fresh-faced kiddie raver days, may we suggest Thanksgiving Bass? Yes, if you were around for the heyday of breakbeats, your heart will be warmed to find out that the music is very much still alive. This low-cost party tonight at Chalk brings together iconic names from the scene like Merlyn and DJ Icey.
