Yesterday, while making it about midway through an entire aisle at Goodwill dedicated exclusively to discarded Brita water containers, I was struck with that nagging reminder that American consumers have far too much new … well, crap. This might help explain the success behind shows like A&E’s Storage Wars and Hoarders (At least we’re not that bad yet, right? Right?!?) but it also serves as a little nudge that it may be perfect timing for us all to downsize, donate, re-gift, recycle or swap the stuff that is gathering dust in the closet before leaving this entire consumerist culture behind. C’mon, who’s with me? Too extreme? Ok, then we’ll start small by going through other people’s gently used, discarded items as Black Locust Society hosts the BLS Outdoor Swap Meet this Saturday.
BLS, the underground collective of musicians, party throwers, artists, small business types and general shit starters (in the absolute best possible sense) will host an outdoor swap meet in an effort to bring people together in honor of the good old fashioned garage sale – that is if the garage sales of old had food trucks, a bake sale and a nearby bar for everyone to party at when the sales commence. So what can you expect to find Saturday? We asked Black Locust Society, and they responded thusly: “The BLS Swap Meet was conceived as a way to bring community, friends and family together in the name of STUFF. A place where anyone can clean out their closet, dump it on a table, and give those neglected items the loving home they deserve. An ocean of odds and ends, a triumph of treasures, an endless assortment of excitement, a smattering of thissering and thattering … Besides, who doesn’t dig a good garage sale?”
